A benefit concert is a concert featuring musicians, comedians, or other performers that is held for a charitable purpose, often directed at a specific and immediate humanitarian crisis. Such events raise both funds and public awareness to address the cause at issue. Generally non-cash benefits received by an employee are referred to as 'fringe benefits'. Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) applies to most, although not all, fringe benefits. Most fringe benefits are also reported on employee payment summaries for inclusion on personal income tax returns that must be lodged annually. The rationale behind FBT is that it helps restore equity and fairness to those employees who do not receive such benefits. Unemployment benefits are sums of money given to the unemployed by the government or a compulsory para-governmental insurance system. Depending on the jurisdiction and the status of the person, those sums may be meager, covering only basic needs (thus a form of basic welfare), or may compensate the lost pay somewhat proportionally to the previous earned salary. Albums or video recordings of performances at benefit concerts can provide additional revenue for the charitable cause to which the event is directed. Furthermore, the importance of the cause can lead musicians to put aside long-held grudges. In the UK, child benefit is administered by the Revenue and Customs Child Benefit Office in Washington. As of April 2006, L17.45 per week is paid for the eldest child (including the eldest of a multiple birth) and L11.30 per week is paid for the any other children. Benefit concerts typically feature popular performers working for little or no pay. The largest such effort in recent memory was the multi-venue Live 8 concert organized by Bob Geldof, who has arranged a number of similar events.
