Employee benefits (also called fringe benefits, perquisites, or perks) are various non-wage compensations provided to employees in addition to their normal wages or salaries. Where an employee exchanges (cash) wages for some other form of benefit this is generally referred to as a 'salary sacrifice' arrangement. Albums or video recordings of performances at benefit concerts can provide additional revenue for the charitable cause to which the event is directed. Furthermore, the importance of the cause can lead musicians to put aside long-held grudges. Housing Benefit is a means tested social security benefit in the UK that is intended to help people with low incomes and low savings pay for rented accommodation. It is governed by the Housing Benefit (General) Regulations 1987 (as amended), and is administered, along with council tax benefit, by the local authority under whose control a property falls. Benefit concerts were also arranged following the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and Hurricane Katrina. In most instances, these plans are funded by both the employees and by the employer(s). The portion paid by the employees are deducted from their gross pay before federal and state taxes are applied. However, that portion would still be subject to the FICA tax. A benefit concert is a concert featuring musicians, comedians, or other performers that is held for a charitable purpose, often directed at a specific and immediate humanitarian crisis. Such events raise both funds and public awareness to address the cause at issue. The purpose of the benefits are to increase the economic security of employees. Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit is generally only available to those who have permanent right to reside in the UK. If a person who doesn't have permanent right submits a claim, the Home Office may be informed, which could result in deportation. In the United States there is Unemployment Insurance, a federal program, established by the Social Security Act of 1935, and administered by individual states and territories. The reason for leaving your last job must be "lack of work" or a determination of your eligibility for benefits will be issued. Unemployment benefits are sums of money given to the unemployed by the government or a compulsory para-governmental insurance system. Depending on the jurisdiction and the status of the person, those sums may be meager, covering only basic needs (thus a form of basic welfare), or may compensate the lost pay somewhat proportionally to the previous earned salary.
